Tue, 21 May 2013 22:18:44

Harry How/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- The Los Angeles Clippers announced on Tuesday that Vinny Del Negro will not return as head coach, after they were bounced from the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Memphis Grizzlies. His current contract expires at the end of June.

“We would like to thank Vinny for everything he did during his three years with the organization,” Clippers vice president of basketball operations Gary Sacks said. “Vinny helped this team win a Pacific Division title and we greatly appreciate all that he and his staff helped us accomplish. This was a difficult decision, but we feel this is the best decision for our franchise moving forward.”

In three seasons roaming the sidelines for the Clippers, the 46-year-old Del Negro went 128-102, leading them to the playoffs twice. This season, the club won a franchise-record 56 games, clinching their first Pacific Division title.

Del Negro previously coached the Chicago Bulls for two seasons.

NFL Awards Super Bowl L & LI
Tue, 21 May 2013 22:15:36

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- NFL team owners voted on Tuesday to award the San Francisco Bay Area Super Bowl L, while Houston was selected to host Super Bowl LI.

The San Francisco Bay Area bid was chosen over a bid from South Florida, which was hampered when the state legislature did not support a financial plan to renovate Sun Life Stadium, the home of the Miami Dolphins. Super Bowl L will take place at Levi's Stadium, the new home of the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, California, which is set to open at the beginning of the 2014 season.

Super Bowl LI will take place at Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans. It will be the second time the stadium has hosted the big game, with the first coming back in 2004.

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey is scheduled to host the next Super Bowl, in 2014.

Yankees and Man City Own New MLS Expansion Team
Tue, 21 May 2013 18:06:02

Michael Dodge/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Two of the biggest teams in sports are teaming up to acquire Major League Soccer's 20th expansion club.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced on Tuesday that the New York Yankees and Manchester City FC will be the newest owner of the New York City Football Club that is expected to begin play in 2015.

"We proudly welcome two of the most prestigious professional global sports organizations to Major League Soccer,” Garber said in a statement released by the league. “This is a transformational development that will elevate the league to new heights in this country. The New York area is home to more than 19 million people, and we look forward to an intense crosstown rivalry between New York City Football Club and the New York Red Bulls that will captivate this great city."

Yankee Stadium will host a friendly match between Man City and Chelsea FC on Saturday.

"We are pleased to be associated with this major move by MLS to increase its presence in the New York market and to enhance the opportunity for New York soccer fans to enjoy high-level play in their own city," said Hal Steinbrenner, managing general partner of the New York Yankees.

Anchored Putting Banned
Tue, 21 May 2013 17:52:40

Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The USGA announced on Tuesday that anchoring the club in making a stroke will be banned effective Jan. 1, 2016.

Four out of the last six major winners have used this technique, including this year's Masters winner Adam Scott.  The use of a belly putter or long putter will no longer be allowed come 2016.

"Rule 14-1b protects one of the important challenges in the game -- the free swing of the entire club," said Glen Nager, president of the USGA, in prepared remarks. "The traditional stroke involves swinging the club with both the club and gripping hands held away from the body, requiring the player to direct and control the movement of the entire club.

"Anchoring is different: Intentionally securing one end of the club against the body, and creating a point of physical attachment around which the club is swung, is a substantial departure from that traditional free swing," he continued.

The USGA and R&A first proposed the offer back in November.

Rob Gronkowski Undergoes Successful Forearm Surgery
Tue, 21 May 2013 15:10:00

Boston Globe (NEW YORK) --  Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski underwent a fourth surgery on his forearm Monday, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Doctors inserted new plates in to repair the previously broken forearm, and they believe that the infection in his forearm is gone.

Without any setbacks, the estimated timetable for a full recovery is around 10 weeks.

Gronkowski may not be out of the woods just yet, as he recently underwent an MRI on his back to further inspect a disk injury that he sustained last season.

Sources told Schefter that Gronkowski will visit noted spine specialist Robert Watkins in California in three to four weeks to decide whether he needs back surgery.

Carmelo Anthony Will Have Shoulder Re-Examined
Tue, 21 May 2013 10:40:00

NBA Via New York Knicks (NEW YORK) --  New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony will have his injured left shoulder re-examined by doctors in the coming days to determine the extent of damage and course of rehabilitation.

Anthony first injured his shoulder on April 14 against the Indiana Pacers, the team that just eliminated the Knicks from the Eastern Conference playoffs.  He said on Monday during his season-ending press conference that the shoulder hindered him during the post-season.

"It was bothering me since it happened," Anthony said. "To be able to play with that and get through the pain, it just came a point where you just try not to think about it. That's where I was at mentally."

Anthony doesn't think surgery will be necessary to repair the shoulder.  He shot 40 percent from the field in 12 playoff games.

"It's just a matter of resting it and letting it heal," he said.

Yankees Send Orioles To Sixth-Straight Loss
Tue, 21 May 2013 08:31:00

Rob Carr/Getty Images(BALTIMORE) --  No matter how many of their players are on the disabled list, never count out the New York Yankees.

They trailed 4-3 in the ninth inning before Travis Hafner tied the game with a home run off of Jim Johnson.  Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay came through in extras and the Yankees rallied for a 6-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.

Johnson has now blown three-straight saves for the Orioles, who have lost six straight.

Mariano Rivera pitched a 1-2-3 tenth inning for his 17th save, and the Yankees remained in first place in the American League East.

"Believe me, I don't take him for granted," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Rivera. "It's hard to do it year after year after year. You're going to see guys go through some ups and downs, but Mo doesn't go through a lot."

The Yankees improved to 19-0 this season when scoring the first run of the game.  Robinson Cano hit his 13th home run of the year in the first inning.
